ABSTRACT

The prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas mainly depends on histological parameters for adjuvant treatment. An onco-pathologist plays a key role for giving a proper histopathology report that clearly underlines all the parameters predicting the stage of the disease. Numerous important parameters such as tumor size, depth of tumor infiltration, tumor thickness, surgical margins, cervical lymph node status, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, extracapsular extension, tumor satellites, stromal pattern, and staging of the disease must be given in the postoperative final histopathology report. This report serves as a document for the whole treatment plan and predicts the prognosis of patient's surgery and the need for adjuvant radiation. This chapter explains all the histopathological parameters in the following in detail.
