ABSTRACT

Leg rings are the most commonly used method of identification for show and exhibition rabbits in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. They should be placed above the hock of either hindlimb. Rabbits should be ringed at about 8-10 weeks of age, except in smaller breeds where earlier ringing is advisable. After this age it can be difficult to slide the ring over the hock joint. As the rabbit grows it is not possible to remove the ring without destroying it. Rings that are too small can cause restriction of blood supply, trauma and severe damage to the limb. Even appropriately sized and placed rings can cause problems if debris or fur build up underneath them. In the UK rings are available from the British Rabbit Council. They are available in ten sizes and allocated to specific breeds.
