ABSTRACT

Symbiosis or 'living together' embraces an immense range of key relationships between species and on which the entire ecosystems of coral reefs depend. For coral reefs, symbiosis is most fundamentally evident in the mutualistic relationship between the corals and microscopic algae known as zooxanthellae. Location: Tulamben, Bali and Lembeh Strait, Sulawesi The relationship between anemonefish and anemones is a classic example of symbiosis. The nature of this amazing symbiosis has been the subject of much debate and is still being researched. Apart from such a tendency towards kleptoparasitism, the shrimp is also suspected of occasionally dining on the crinoid's tube feet, which would make the symbiosis decidedly parasitic. Location: Raja Ampat, West Papua and Lembeh Strait, Sulawesi The relationships between animals and those that clean them by removing their ectoparasites are some of the most well-known examples of a symbiosis.
