ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on celebrate the amazingly rich marine biodiversity of the Coral Triangle, the urgent need for conservation is also a constant theme. The latter, having the protection of a military base, was previously considered to be one of the healthiest and most resilient examples of tropical coral reefs, yet it too has now succumbed to the ravages of climate change. The witnessed during the two decades following the inaugural International Year of the Reef in 1997, is an increasing deterioration of coral reefs on a global scale. The small majority may, thus, make a big contribution to solving Darwin's Paradox. Now sitting in splendid isolation, it is the last of a group of 30 volcanos which formed one of the such arcs that originally gave rise to the Coral Triangle. Diving in the almost primeval environment at Komba provides a surreal experience in which one feels the very presence of creation.
