ABSTRACT

The origins of many medical specialities are largely lost in the mists of time – dating back many hundreds, if not thousands of years. In most respects that is not the case for radiology and the field of medical imaging, which can, according to the most familiar narrative, trace their origin to Friday, November 8, 1895. Rontgen presented a summary of his work to the Wurzburg Physico-Medical Society on December 28, 1895, and news of his discovery spread across the globe with remarkable speed, generating excitement and hyperbole amongst the scientific community and public alike. Rontgen's original radiograph was a negative image, but was acquired on a fragile glass plate – he used this negative image to produce positive photo prints to send to colleagues across Europe.
