ABSTRACT

In radiographic practice, a similar uncertainty is encountered in relation to which side of the body is being imaged. For the majority of radiographic examinations it can be impossible to tell with certainty which side of the body has been imaged unless the radiographer has provided a left/right marker on the image. Very few examples of maps with west at the top are known to exist because of the negative connotations of the sun disappearing in this direction. In traditional Chinese maps the orientation is reversed, and north is located at the top of the map. Mirrors have been well utilised throughout the history of cinema, in genres as diverse as film noir, fantasy, horror and art-house. Most self-portraits through history have been performed using a mirror, resulting in left-right reversal.
