ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the main argument: introspection is recommended for anthropic artificial intelligence (AI). It deals with motivations for different ways of thinking. A major difference between theories of technology is often their position on the question of whether technology is merely “applied science” or has some different inherent nature. It is the aspiration of science to aim for the most accurate facts and to stick to the truth with great zeal. Some researchers build AI models in order to scientifically understand humans, mice, insects, neural functioning, or some other scientific question, while others build AI in order to solve problems of technology. The distinction between technology and science isn’t sharp either – a working system demonstrates to science what can be achieved by the underlying mechanism, and conversely, scientific models serve as the bases for AI systems.
