ABSTRACT

The data on the molecular mass, size, and composition of the RNA phage particles are compiled in the course of the historical development of knowledge about them. The general concepts about the symmetry and morphology of the RNA phage particles are presented. This chapter contains maximally full information about the defective particles of the RNA phages, as well as about the attempts to reconstitute viable particles from the purified structural elements. The methods for the monitoring of the RNA phage particles and for the prevention of their aggregation are outlined. The role of the RNA phage particles as internal controls and traditional standards is highlighted.
