ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to address the issue of deformation behavior/mechanical behavior of nanostructure materials, with a prime focus on discussing the underlying mechanisms that govern the deformation process. Categorization of nanostructured materials based on dimensionality, microstructure, atomic arrangement, morphology, and grain size have been presented here elaborately. Furthermore, the chapter deals with the variation in the mechanical properties of different categories of nanostructured materials such as tensile strength and flexural strength for various parameters, for instance, size of the materials, radiation effect, and volume fraction of the reinforcements (in case of nanocomposites). Moreover, intricate details of the overall mechanism associated with different types of nanostructured materials responsible for such deformation behavior have been summarized. Finally, toughening mechanism associated with such nanostructured materials has also been elucidated in detail.
