ABSTRACT
Considering local adaptation to climate change as determinant for the quality of future cities, this chapter identifies, classifies, and describes different categories and types of flood adaptation measures applicable in the design of public spaces. Learning from a particularly targeted literature review together with empirical observations, it was possible to systematize 40 types of flood adaptation measures, covered by 16 categories.
A state-of-the-art review on previously developed frameworks supported the initial identification of the existing types and categories of measures, a systematization process that, as envisioned, provided results of a general nature based on a comprehensive research. Bearing in mind the fundamental requirement to be sufficiently elucidated regarding existing knowledge when approaching any public space design project with flood adaptation capacities, the extent of presented measures can be particularly relevant for anyone recently involved in this type of practice.
The chance to easily grasp an overview of the existing range of options regarding the different types of flood adaptation measures applicable in the design of public spaces facilitates and accelerates the initial phase of a particularly targeted design process. As such, drawn schemes exemplifying each type of measure further accompany this analysis.
