ABSTRACT

The sound track is the spackle that smooths over the gaps in the experience and glues it all together, making it one continuous soundscape. In interactive media, a soundscape is designed to enhance and punctuate the choices and actions of the user. In soundscapes, it’s important to have a balance of contrasting frequencies in order to support audio clarity for the different elements. A soundscape is an emotional landscape made of sound. Well-designed audio accesses game players’ or viewers’ imaginations and emotions to enhance their experience. The chapter presents the basics of sound design’s role in the larger design process and includes some favorite tricks to create effective and fun audio environments for kids. Looping is a big part of many styles of music right, but interactive media sound designers have been using it for a long time.
