ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to talk about known feminine and masculine play patterns, while keeping in mind that every person has their own blend of interests and attractions. Sometimes, gender-based play patterns affect how kids approach interactive media. The tendency is to polarize behaviors and create two large categories, one for masculine and one for feminine play patterns. Statements about behavior must be seen as only generalizations because they give us a way of talking about play patterns and general interests, knowing full well that no statement includes all possibilities. The content needs to support the play patterns that a majority of girls favor, while offering choices for outliers and leaving room for both genders to participate. When products utilize play patterns that focus on just one gender, they often unintentionally exclude some who might naturally want to participate.
