ABSTRACT

This chapter describes good practices and processes to keep game designers design on target, tips on what parents want, fatal design decisions to avoid, and designing for trans-media properties. Designing for children involves many of the same demands that are part of any game or app design: balancing the desires of the client and the technical needs of the platform, working with existing intellectual property, dealing with budgets and bugs, and creating an environment for strong teamwork. Success depends on how much effort and ingenuity is applied during design and production. Repurposing content is effective if the project is led by experienced interactive designers and producers who know how to assess the existing content and deliver it in a new format. Transmedia is a term used to describe the process when designers recreate a known brand or title in a different medium.
