ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how to help ignite the personal creative spark in the beginning and keep it alive all the way through production. Two main creative styles in production design are Blue Sky Creativity and Problem Solver Creativity. Designs that are constantly “improved” become very expensive, and the end product may have trouble being born. Sometimes there is a resistance to actually spending much time on the preliminary design, especially in medium to large companies. Part of intelligent design is having enough information and knowledge about the subject game designers are interested in exploring. The design document takes in all the pertinent information and creates an integrated plan to work with. Design documents are made to change, but writing designers' concepts down forces they to think in more detail and to explore how the pieces might connect together. Good design documentation keeps track of details and can be a map that helps designers remember where they are going.
