ABSTRACT

This chapter provides basic practices for children’s interface design, common mistakes, and, most importantly, tips on how to create and maintain deeply involved engagement that will keep kids charmed, delighted, and coming back for more. Kids will feel successful and in control as soon as possible. Intuitive design of function buttons allows kids to navigate easily, and it supports their desire for exploration and control. The kids had elaborate ideas of what they thought was possible, such as the fish jumping higher each time to reach food being held at the top of the page. Adding even a little humor and silliness to a program can go a long way toward getting kids to love it and come back to it. Kids love humor. Personalization is one of the easiest ways for kids to express a sense of themselves. With personalization, kids get to make their own whatever from available variables.
