ABSTRACT

The impact of audio on media is so profound a part of the experience that, while designing, it’s important to remember: Good audio makes poor pictures look better. Our inborn reactions to audio input have evolved over millennia to aid us in survival and socialization. Good audio production is as important as the visual production in creating a complete and engaging entertainment experience in our minds. High quality audio fills in the blanks in our experience of the visual and makes it believable by making it seem more like the real world. But the reverse is not true; hot graphics won’t make clunky audio sound any better. The better the audio fidelity, the more realistic and lifelike the sounds. The audio joke was that the designer had used the sound of an airplane flying and swooping down and zooming back up past the cow.
