ABSTRACT
This chapter explains scheduling and adhering to schedules, an important function of project management since exceeding schedule is one of the characteristics of failed projects. One of the key points in scheduling is that generally the first estimate of the time to perform at an activity will be lower than the actual time it will take. Levelling the workload is an iterative activity of adjusting the schedule and the staffing to reach an acceptable staffing level and at the same time an acceptable schedule. The schedules on the work packages during the planning stage are only estimates of the time that the activity would take. Accordingly, there is a tolerance on that estimated time which means there is a shorter estimated time and a longer estimated time as well as the nominal estimated time. Scheduling and adhering to schedules is an important function of project management, exceeding schedule is one of the characteristics of failed projects.
