ABSTRACT

The alternative to sitting in most office jobs is standing. Most office workers spend a great deal of the day at their computers or laptops and would have to stand very. J. M. Schuna et al. compared energy expenditure of eight male and eight female volunteers while: sitting at rest; seated in an office chair typing; typing while seated on a pedal desk at their own pace; typing on a treadmill desk while walking at their own pace. Large, inflatable balls have long been used in clinical physical therapy and, have been proposed as seats for office workers – particularly office workers who suffer backache when sitting at their desks. Energy expenditure when using the pedal and treadmill desks was about double that when typing seated at a conventional desk, although the energy expenditure of males was higher on the treadmill desk than at the pedal desk.
