Introduction

Chapter 1 gives a definition of the term “synergy” and describes its meaning in a modern context. Using volleyball as an example, the author explains the practical approach of using synergies in a teamwork environment and develops basic conditions that need to be satisfied in order to enable a team to use synergies to its benefit. The insights gained from the example are then transferred to the synergies that present themselves within the integration of petroleum refining and petrochemicals.
