ABSTRACT

Estimation of total biomass stock involves the precise accounting of above ground and below ground biomass of the tree. Since, for biomass estimation the first stone of biomass model development was laid down since long ago, till date a number of studies have developed different models or equations for tropical and sub-tropical trees for future biomass estimation. The biomass carbon stock under rubber tree plantations increased with the increase of plantation age. The rate of carbon sequestration in biomass of a tree mainly varies with the age and adopted management activities. Although carbon sequestration rate in rubber plantation is comparable to many agroforestry and plantations systems with high economic profitability from latex production assures its long-term management and therefore, acts as a permanent sink of atmospheric CO2. Clean development mechanism is one of the three mechanisms under flexible market mechanisms adopted in the KP. This mechanism encourages the role of biomass in carbon stock management through afforestation and reforestation activities.
