ABSTRACT

When considering any building development the design team will need to carefully consider the environmental and physical aspects of the site and proposed construction works. A method statement precedes preparation of the project programme and contains the detail necessary for the construction of each element of a building. It is prepared from information contained in the contract documents. Permitted development applies specifically to extensions and alterations to houses, but not flats. Houses in conservation areas and those listed for historical interest may be excluded. Buildings considered to be a national asset and worthy of preservation are listed. Statutory listing applies to about half-a-million buildings. This status places responsibility on their owners to keep them in good order. Buildings of special historic or architectural interest are protected by provisions in the Planning Act. The regulations are supported by approved documents which give guidance on how to achieve the required performance standards.
