ABSTRACT

A site survey is a digital measured survey of the land, including ground levels. Two principal methods are used to obtain soil samples, which are then tested on site or in a laboratory: trial pits and boreholes. The test results of soil samples are usually shown on a drawing which gives the location of each sample and the test results in the form of a hatched legend or section. These are soil samples obtained from boreholes and trial pits. Method chosen will depend on several factors: size of contract, type of proposed foundation, type of sample required and types of subsoils which may be encountered. Soils can be classified in many ways, such as geological origin, physical properties, chemical composition and particle size. It has been found that the particle size and physical properties of a soil are closely linked and are therefore of particular importance and interest to a designer.
