ABSTRACT

There are two primary types of ground floor: ground supported concrete slabs and suspended floors. Hardcore is used to provide a stable base for the floor and is installed in layers not exceeding 150mm thick, which are compacted by roller or plate compactors so that no settlement will occur. Damp proof membrane is a layer of heavy duty polythene sheeting that prevents moisture from the ground passing into the floor and into the interior of the building. A semi-dry mix of sharp sand and cement covering the concrete slab, which is levelled and floated to provide a flat level surface to receive floor finishes. Industrial concrete floors are designed to carry medium to heavy loadings, such as those used in factories, warehouses, shops, garages and similar buildings. A rigid form of floor insulation is required where the concrete floor slab is in contact with the ground. Ground-bearing floors can include insulation either below or above the concrete slab.
