ABSTRACT

This chapter provides various examples of swarm intelligence applied to AI areas. First, a brief explanation of reaction-diffusion computing is given. Then, a detailed description of its remarkable example, i.e., Voronoi diagram generation, is provided. The way in which it is applied to thinning and skeltonization for pre-processing in image understanding is also shown. Then, after explaining traditional queuing and scheduling theories with related cognitive-science knowledge, a traffic modelling, in which traffic congestion is modelled in a one-dimensional lattice, is given. This model has been extended to simulate silicon traffic in a virtual two-dimensional map. Silicon traffic is a key engineering technique applied to control traffic jams in a real-world environment.
