ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the key activities performed by a Software Project Manager. These activities are described within the context of the six overlapping domains. Six domains are project management domain, quality management domain, quality management domain, systems domain, software domain, and critical elements domain. The chapter provides the overall objectives of Software Project Management including balancing scope and resources in order to achieve project control. It also provides a brief introduction to the key Software Project Management control areas including management of software: requirements and requirements traceability; risk; performance measurement tracking and control; product quality; costs and schedules; resources; work products; suppliers; estimation; and integration and testing. The chapter analyses the Software Process Improvement management control areas including software: process group; quality assurance; Configuration Management; Corrective Action; Peer Reviews; an introduction to the Capability Maturity Management Integrated processes; and the application of Six Sigma to software.
