ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a preliminary numerical analysis of the onset of the 2014 Oso Landslide in an attempt to demonstrate the ability of Material Point Method to model small strain behaviours and the transition towards large deformation behaviours. The geology is the result of complex interactions between different lithologies and several glaciers with ice flowing both up and down the valley. The pushing-and-pulling of these glaciers caused disruptions in the stratigraphy. Four scenarios are generated. The first scenario assumes the remobilisation of the 2006 Hazel landslide and the presence of a weak layer at its base. The second simulation assumes the remobilisation of the 2006 Hazel landslide without the weak layer. The third simulation assumes the presence of the weak layer without the mobilisation of the 2006 Hazel landslide. The fourth simulation assumes no remobilisation of the 2006 Hazel landslide and the absence of the weak layer.
