ABSTRACT
Information is central to protein structure analysis. This chapter offers a précis based on systems, states, and mathematical probability. Attention is given to the different types of information and the distance measures between states. Liquid and vapor solutions offer familiar systems amenable to characterization by information vectors. They prepare the stage for exploring the lower-level structures of proteins.
