ABSTRACT

A 75-year-old woman was admitted to hospital following a fall at home. She tripped over an object on the floor and fell onto her right side. The patient’s carer was with her at the time and helped her back to her feet whilst waiting for the ambulance to arrive. The patient reported feeling well aside from pain over her right arm. Her past medical history included multiple previous falls, which had resulted in fractures to the left wrist and the left hip. She additionally reported postural hypotension and recurrent urinary tract infections. Her regular medications included a combination tablet of calcium carbonate and vitamin D3 1500 mg/400 IU twice daily, and paracetamol 1 g QDS. She lived alone with a twice daily package of care to assist with meal preparation. She did not drink alcohol and had never smoked.
