ABSTRACT

An 80-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with slurred speech and left arm weakness. Her symptoms had developed suddenly 12 h earlier and had gradually increased over the past 3 h. Her past medical history included hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Her regular medications were lercanidipine 10 mg OD, ramipril 5 mg OD, atorvastatin 40 mg ON and metformin 500 mg BD. She was a retired author, lived alone and was independent for all activities of daily living.
