ABSTRACT

A 72-year-old woman presented to her general practitioner after experiencing muscle cramps on multiple occasions over the preceding weeks. She described developing cramps in her calf muscles and occasionally in her feet. The cramping pains had no clear precipitating factors, such as exercise or lying flat, and could come on at any point in the day or night. Her past medical history included hypertension and type-2 diabetes mellitus. Her regular medications were metformin 500 mg BD, lercanidipine 20 mg OD, and she had also commenced modified-release indapamide 1.5 mg OD 4 weeks earlier. She lived with her husband and was independent.
