ABSTRACT

A 76-year-old woman was brought to hospital after her daughter found her to be confused. Her daughter reported visiting daily and had noticed the patient becoming increasingly disorientated and drowsy over the past 2–3 days. The patient’s past medical history included osteoporosis, a recent elective hip replacement, and diet-controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus. She was a retired history teacher, lived alone, and was independent until her surgery 2 weeks earlier. She did not drink alcohol and had never smoked.
