ABSTRACT

A 55-year-old man was admitted to hospital with shortness of breath and a cough productive of green sputum. His past medical history included type 2 diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. His regular medications were metformin 500 mg BD, a beclometasone/formoterol 200/6 inhaler 2 puffs BD and a salbutamol 200 μg inhaler 2 puffs BD. He worked as a security officer, was an ex-smoker with a 10-pack year history and drank approximately 6 units of alcohol per week.
