ABSTRACT

In response to the spreading Polygon-mania, the game’s creator Piet Hein, together with expert player Jens Lindhard, will demonstrate the game’s strategy and finer points. In October 2017, hoping to find Polygon paraphernalia among Lindhard’s papers, Bjarne Toft went to Aarhus. The Lindhard archive fills in many of the historical gaps in the story of Polygon. In particular, it shows that the Polygon project was a two-man partnership, with Hein the expositor and Lindhard the game expert. Lindhard was Polygon’s primary puzzlist, composing at least 27 of the 49 Politiken puzzles. The puzzles are exquisitely crafted: with only a handful of exceptions, each has exactly one winning move. The puzzle drafts shown in this section are from the Lindhard archive: as expected, some are unfinished sketches. Hein had good reason to supply Lindhard with puzzle sheets: in addition to the Politiken columns, Hein was planning a Polygon instructional booklet.
