ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses fire hazards to human civilization from a historical point of view. Among the common household materials, wood is very fire-prone. Particular hazards are posed by burning textiles, especially cotton, jute and flax (linen). This was recognized by early civilizations and alum was known to reduce ignitability and thereby, confer flame retardancy. Various fire-related topics, such as combustion, ignition, charring, and flammability are discussed.
