ABSTRACT
In this chapter we give a survey of differentiable dynamics as a backdrop for the contrasting Hamiltonian picture of the next chapter. This area, revived by Lefshetz, Peixoto, Reeb, Smale, and Thom in the late 1950s, is still advancing rapidly.
