ABSTRACT
This short chapter provides a backdrop for the next two chapters. We have deliberately set off this material so that the distinction between the topological and differentiable aspects of dynamical systems is clearly maintained. Here we collect only the small number of topics in the topological dynamics of continuous flows that are used in the sequel.
