ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a series of case studies, or illustrations. Illustrations showing the application of a technical concept are likely to appear simplistic to a natural scientist, but may be helpful to an economist or planning officer. The illustrations are clustered by subject matter. The chapter discusses several llustrations. These include: The Use of Economic Analysis In the Design of Projects: A land clearing project, the economics of soil conservation in a semi-arid country, the physical and economic impacts of sedimentation on fishing in a reservoir in ne thailand, yields and depth of topsoil and estimating soil life-span. These also include: economic Value of nutrients, replacement value approach, the paradox of the plow, costs and benefits of terraces and varanasi soil conservation project. The design of watershed management schemes involves choosing among conservation techniques and possible land uses. Soil conservation methods are of two types -- that is, biological or engineering methods.
