ABSTRACT

Game theory is a theory of rational behavior of people with nonidentical interests. Its area of application extends considerably beyond games in the usual sense—it includes, for example, economics, politics, and war. By the term "game" we mean any such situation, defined by some set of "rules." The term "play" refers to a particular occurrence of a game. Thus chess is a game, and several plays of chess took place in the summer of 1972 between Fisher and Spassky.
