ABSTRACT

This chapter provides several examples of the approaches to the development of cassava production and utilization under very different circumstances. Cassava production in India has expanded dramatically since 1950, largely because yields have risen from 5 t/ha to 16 t/ha. Research work on cassava in Kerala has a long history. The Central Tuber Crops Research Institute conducts research that is oriented toward the development of improved agronomic practices and the production of improved varieties. Cassava management in Cuba in the 1970s was based on sugarcane production practices. Cassava production in Thailand expanded from 3 million tons to nearly 18 million tons during the 1970s, largely as a result of trade agreements governing the importation of cereals to the European Community. The growth of the cassava industry was spurred by the development of an extensive road network for strategic reasons.
