ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a majority of the several thousand tablones in Panajachel were surveyed for crop character, with some 1,300 being surveyed at the beginning of the dry season. Panajachel enjoys favorable growing conditions for a wide variety of crop plants. In short, Panajachel is propitiously located at the juncture of several climatic zones and offers viable habitat for a maximum of different crops. Major crops refer to the sixteen or more plants that usually comprise 80 percent or more of the total crop composition for a given tablon. Strawberries represent the biggest change in the cash cropping pattern since Sol Tax's survey. Maize remains the second most important crop grown in tablones, and if one includes the maize grown in shifting milpas outside the delta by Panajachelenos, then it is the primary crop of the village. The delta is located toward the lower limit of the cabbage range. Panajachelenos can grow other vegetables more profitably.
