ABSTRACT

The precise clearing procedures are dependent on how long the tablones have lain idle. Changes in ownership, lack of capital for supplies, changing employment practices among the family members, as well as strictly agronomic considerations, all play a part in the decisions that keep a tablon out of production. The refuse is piled and burned, and the ashes are added to the soil. Fallow tablones without woody shrubs are cleared by scrapping with an azadon. Standing immediately behind the trench, the process is repeated, covering the trench and working up another meter of the tablon. Strawberries are another plant that requires modifications of the tablon structure. Small ridges are made on top of the tablon for strawberry plants. Natural features present occasional problems for tablon construction. Manioc is grown from sections of the stalk placed on the tablon tops in rows every four or more feet.
