ABSTRACT

The population of Arizona is heterogeneous, though whites compose 72 percent of the population. Rapid population growth is not a new trend in Arizona, for it has experienced rapid growth ever since it became a part of the United States. Population growth in Arizona is the result of a combination of three factors: births, deaths, and migration. Besides the ethnic groups mentioned, there are many other ethnic groups that have settled in Arizona and have left their mark there. Zero population growth is achieved when births equal deaths and immigration equals emigration, neither of which will happen soon in Arizona. Although fewer people immigrated to some counties, such as Yavapai and Mohave, those counties were affected to an even greater degree because of the small original population base. The age-sex structure of the population is very similar to that of the United States. The black population is also young, as is indicated by the age-sex structure.
