ABSTRACT

The vast majority of the new Arizonans are urban dwellers, and they tend to live in the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas. Among the towns in Arizona, Tucson had the earliest start. There were two Indian villages in the area of Tucson when the Spanish entered the area. The citizens of Tucson were very instrumental in having Arizona made a territory and in separating it from New Mexico, and they thought the capital should be Tucson, the largest and most dynamic city. In Arizona towns were established at strategic spots as the rail lines were built, so many of the towns in Arizona date back to the early 1880s. In 1885 the Territorial Normal School was established in Tempe, and that school was to grow into Arizona State University. The railroads in Arizona were built to cross the state rather than to serve it, and, besides, there were few towns in Arizona when the first railroads were built.
