ABSTRACT

116When multiple objectives for optimum life–cycle management strategies are available, a successful integration of these objectives can be achieved, and multiple trade–off solutions can be obtained using a multi-objective optimization process. In Chapter 6, the multi-objective probabilistic optimum inspection and monitoring planning for fatigue-sensitive structures is investigated. The objective functions used in this chapter are the lifetime probability of fatigue crack damage detection, expected damage detection delay, damage detection time–based probability of failure, expected maintenance delay, expected extended service life and expected life-cycle cost. The bi- tri- and quad-objective and more than four objectives optimization problems are investigated. Representative solutions from the Pareto optimal set associated with the multi-objective optimization processes are compared. The multi-objective optimum inspection and monitoring planning approach presented, is applied to the fatigue-sensitive details of a steel bridge and a ship hull structure.
