ABSTRACT

Human knowledge in fields such as genetics, molecular biology, cellular biology, physiology and other life sciences disciplines, is gained and enhanced by studying “model organisms”. Human Genome Project chose Arabidopsis as the only model plant, first because of its small genome, and secondly to compare the similarities and differences between plant and animal genomes. This chapter discusses a number of animals that either are linked already to the therapeutic treatments of human disease, or may have the potential to develop such a human connection. Scallops are very interesting animals with strong human connections. Scallops have a well-developed nervous system. Sapiens has gained a lot of inspiration from animals. Dolphins are often considered the second- or third-most intelligent animals after sapiens. Dolphins are very intelligent. They are able to learn, to cooperate, and even to scheme and grieve. Dolphins possess amazing regenerative capabilities, which could inspire new anti-bacterial treatments and wound healing for humans.
