ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the subject of posture and aims to provide an understanding of what can assist in creating a comfortable, supported working posture when performing office-based tasks. Both sitting postures and standing postures are explored. Whole body, upper body, and upper limb posture are all discussed, and the chapter outlines the stresses that can be placed on the body as a result of poor posture. Issues, such as upper limb disorders (also known as RSI) and musculoskeletal disorders, are highlighted. How adjustments should be made to the workstation equipment, such as desks, chairs, and footrests are discussed, and a specific step-by-step guide is provided for the adjustment of a chair, such as how to achieve the correct sitting height relative to the keyboard and desk and how to use the lumbar support for the back. Head and neck posture are also discussed in terms of how the screen should be positioned so that the user does not have to look above their horizontal line of sight. Specific reference is made to hot-desking situations.
