ABSTRACT

The world of computers has changed radically over the last decade. Computers are no longer seen as pieces of equipment that belong only in an office setting to be used for work purposes. Computers are used in every environment we might encounter during the course of a day and are used in so many diverse ways. Mobile computer technology has now spread into most professional and private arenas. Nowadays, the advantages of having access to tablets, notebooks, phablets, and smartphones have overshadowed the popularity of laptops. One of the main reasons for this increase in popularity is that the smaller devices are particularly mobile. However, this specific feature, along with integrated touchscreens, enables users to adopt postures that are very different to the postures adopted when using typical desktop computers, and these have the potential to make the user feel uncomfortable. This chapter outlines the new challenges that have been brought to the workplace by the use of mobile devices. It also touches on the features of a display that can make it easier to read accurately and rapidly and considers typefaces, fonts, colour choices, wording, and screen layout.
