ABSTRACT

Although the majority of people who interact with computers as a normal part of their working day are located within a central office building, many users are now working from a staggering array of environments outside of their employer’s premises. Agile working, flexible working, remote working, mobile working, working from home—whatever it is that people do, today’s work is all about what they do and not where they do it. The one helpful feature of trying to provide advice in situations that would be considered atypical, is that people have basically the same requirements irrespective of the environment in which they are working. This chapter discusses out-of-office working, home working, transient workplaces such as hotels, conferences, and conference rooms, as well as meeting rooms or break-out areas in actual office buildings. This chapter also deals with the very common issue of working in mobile offices, such as trains and planes where the individual is likely to be a passenger, as well as other vehicles, such as cars, automobiles, vans, and trucks where the individual is likely to be the driver. Very specific advice is offered with regards to using mobile devices in vehicles such as cars. There is also guidance on how touchscreens have been employed in some vehicles, such as in the roof of vans and trucks, or on the dashboard (fascia).
