ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the main benefits of multi-access edge computing (MEC) from the point of view of vertical market segments. It discusses the heterogeneous ecosystem of verticals, and presents a more detailed case study, as a meaningful example for the automotive sector. The chapter provides an overview of the main MEC benefits in common to all segments, always from a “vertical” point of view: from the need for performance improvement, to the unlock from operators ownership and control, and the adoption of standards as a means to guarantee interoperable IT solutions. Most of the market forecasts are also emphasizing that revenues coming from vertical streams will increase in the future, and potentially overcompensate the decrease of value coming from voice and traditional data services. The chapter introduces some aspects specifically from an industry vertical perspective. Each new vertical imposes new and heterogeneous requirements to the forthcoming communication systems.
