ABSTRACT

Mineral exploration is the activity associated with searching, finding or detecting and defining an economically extractable ore. Prospecting uses a variety of methods from the traditional ones of searching for surface outcrops of mineralisation to the methods of conceptual geology, geochemistry and geophysics for exploration of tenements that have minimal surface outcrop. Mineral exploration gets categorised into greenfields exploration or brownfields exploration. Greenfields mineral exploration is conducted in regions that are geologically underexplored or not explored at all and so entail a higher risk and expenditure. If significant mineralisation or assay intersections are detected, then further detailed drilling would be conducted to check whether an economic resource can be identified. Gossans are weathered varieties of rocks that contain substantial amounts of sulphide minerals such as matrix or massive sulfides. Transported cover refers to the exotic Earth material unconformably overlying the fresh or weathered mineralised basement, and is therefore post-mineralisation.
